THE BOARD OF ASSESSMENT REVIEW WILL BE HEARING COMPLAINTS REGARDING ASSESSMENTS ON TUESDAY, MAY 26, 2026 BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 4:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. AT THE TOWN HALL, Broderick Room PRIOR APPOINTMENTS ARE NECESSARY FOR ALL HEARING REQUESTS AND CAN BE SCHEDULED BY CONTACTING THE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE AND SUBMITTING THE NECESSARY PAPERWORK BY MAY 19, 2026 NON-HEARING GRIEVANCES MUST BE SUBMITTED BY May 26, 2026.
If You Do Not Agree with Your Assessed Value
All property owners have the right to a review of their property assessment. The process by which assessments may be challenged is as follows:
- 1st step – File a Formal Grievance (Handled at the Town level)
- You might get a stipulation offer from the Assessor. If you do, you can accept or reject that offer. There is no negotiating a stipulation. Accepting the offer will vacate your meeting with the Board of Assessment Review (B.A.R.) and your assessed value is locked into the agreed number. If you reject the offer, you still make your case at the B.A.R. meeting.
- If you do not get a stipulation and are unsatisfied with the B.A.R.’s decision, you can file a Small Claims Assessment Review package.
- You must complete the 1st Step to be eligible to file the 2nd step.
- 2nd step – File a Small Claims Assessment Review (Handled by Monroe County Supreme Court)
- It is a less costly and more informal alternative to a formal Tax Certiorari proceeding, which can be time-consuming and expensive. As outlined in Section 730 of the Real Property Tax Law, property owners may petition the court for review of their property assessment before a specially trained hearing officer for a nominal fee of $30.
Formal Grievances
Formal Grievances can be filed at the Assessor's Office between May 1st and 8:00 p.m. on the 4th Tuesday of May. You must provide five copies with supporting documentation for each board member. It is not necessary or required that you present your complaint to the Board of Assessment Review. If you wish to present your complaint to the Board of Assessment Review, keep in mind that:
When a complaint is filed within three business days preceding the BAR hearing, the BAR must grant the assessor's request for an adjournment to permit the assessor time to prepare a response to a complaint (RPTL 524).
More information on the formal grievance procedure is provided below:
