Common Violations

Some of the most common code violations are:

GrassMust be maintained to a height of 6 inches or less. If the grass is over 6 inches in height it is in violation and must be cut.
Abandoned VehicleNo residential property owner is permitted to keep a motor vehicle that is unlicensed/unregistered, or a vehicle that is not roadworthy (intact with no flat tires), on their property, unless it is stored in a completely enclosed building.
Storage of Recreational VehiclesFrom April 1st to November 1st, one recreational vehicle may be stored on the driveway extending beyond the property's front building line, if setbacks are met. For the remainder of the year, they must be stored behind the property's front building line. Maximum of two on-premises any time of year.
Garbage/Refuse on the Front LawnNo person shall accumulate or permit the accumulation of garbage/refuse upon any premises owned or occupied by him or her except for the purpose of regular weekly garbage removal or active construction.
Parking on the lawnNo required front or side yard or portion thereof, other than driveways, in any R-R, R-1, R-2, R-3, or R-6 Residential District shall be utilized to provide parking spaces required in this chapter.

While there is an established timeframe for the enforcement process, it can vary based on the violation type and the associated risk(s) to health and safety. The Code Enforcement Unit has some discretion in addressing code violations and provides property owners with the appropriate time to bring their property into compliance with Town Code.

The Town Code Enforcement unit will inspect complaints received, but they can only issue code violation notices for conditions that are prohibited under Town Code.
